Insert · where they live

Cape Town's colony lives at Boulders

When people talk about the Cape Town penguins, they mean the African penguins of Boulders, a land-based colony on the edge of Simon's Town that SANParks calls unique and endangered. The colony sits in a sheltered cove between Simon's Town and Cape Point, inside Table Mountain National Park, and it is one of the few places where you can watch these birds at close range in the wild.

The Boulders section has 3 beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. SANParks says the birds are best seen from Foxy Beach, where the boardwalks take you right to them, while Boulders Beach next door is the spot for a swim. Stay on the boards inside the viewing area: they were built to keep the penguins safe from fingers.

Entry is a daily conservation fee paid at the gate, by card only, since the Boulders gate is cash-free. For 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, SANParks lists R282 for an international adult and R138 for a child; check its rates before you go. The day tour on this page drives you there, gives you about an hour with the colony, and adds Cape Point to the same day. This penguin colony in Cape Town is easy to reach by car, by train or on a tour.

Why take the coach

The colony is far south.
The point is further.
One day joins them.

Boulders sits on the edge of Simon's Town, and Cape Point lies at the tip of the peninsula beyond it. This shared coach tour covers both in 8 hours, with about an hour among the penguins, about 2 at Cape Point and half an hour at the Cape of Good Hope. A live guide speaks English all day, and you board at a bus stop near your hotel.

Park fees are paid on the day, on top of the fare.

Insert · the day itself

From a city bus stop to the tip of Africa

Your day starts at a City Sightseeing stop, from Camps Bay at 08:55 to Orange Street at 09:47; at 09:30 the coach also calls at the V&A Waterfront, in front of the aquarium. The coach is a double-decker with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and USB charging at your seat, and the group can reach 60. Upstairs, the windows frame the whole coast.

The road runs south past Muizenberg beach and Kommetjie without stopping, into the fenced Cape of Good Hope section, where SANParks asks you to watch for eland, red hartebeest, bontebok and zebra. About 2 hours at Cape Point follow, with a walk or the funicular up to the lighthouse, then about half an hour at the Cape of Good Hope.

The penguins come next: about an hour at Boulders before the coach climbs the Ou Kaapse Weg pass through Silvermine and back to the city. Lunch is your own, wherever the day allows, so carry a little money for a sandwich or a café table on the way.

Insert · what guests praise

What travellers remember afterwards

Guests praise the guides above all, by name and at length: the stories on the road, the humour, the patience with a big group. Many also single out the walk from Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope, which several reviewers recommend, and the comfort of the double-decker coach.

The penguins are the other constant. Reviewers describe more birds than they expected, birds posing on the sand and on the rocks, and mixed views on the hour at Boulders: most find it enough, a few wish for longer. Wildlife on the drive comes up too, from ostriches beside the road to zebra and eland seen from the coach or on the trail.

The criticism is honest and worth reading before you book. Some guests found the hike rushed, a few missed the coach at a pickup stop, and several remind others that both park fees are paid on top of the ticket. Read the meeting email the day before carefully, and you avoid the most common complaint.

Insert · the penguin year

Mating in January, chicks through winter

There is no closed season for the colony, but the birds' year changes what you see. SANParks says moulting peaks in December, when the penguins stand on land for about 21 days, unable to swim or feed, before heading out to sea to fatten up again. A moulting penguin looks scruffy and still, and it should be left alone.

They return in January to mate and nest from about February to August, and the main breeding season starts in February. Through autumn and winter you may spot eggs in the nest hollows and, later, grey chicks waiting for their parents to return from fishing.

About 60 days after hatching, some young birds already wear blue-grey juvenile feathers and are called baby blues. They gather on the beach before their first trip to sea, and they are among the most rewarding sights for a patient visitor on the boardwalk.

Insert · wind and sun

Summer sun, winter rain and a lot of wind

Cape Town has a Mediterranean-type climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, as SANParks describes the peninsula. NOAA's record for Cape Town International Airport, 29 km from Boulders, averages 27.7 °C on a January day and 18.5 °C in July, with 7 days of rain of 2.5 mm or more in June.

Wind matters more than rain at the point. SANParks says northwesterlies in winter often reach gale force, and summer southerlies can blow as hard for long spells. On the exposed walk at Cape Point, a jacket is welcome even on a bright day, and caps are easily lost.

At Boulders, the cove is sheltered by huge granite boulders, so the beach often feels calmer than the open coast. Bring sun cream all year: the boardwalks and the white sand reflect a lot of light, and there is little shade on the walk down.

Insert · your photos

Photographing penguins without a long lens

You do not need special equipment. The boardwalks at Boulders bring you close to the birds, and a phone captures them well. What helps is patience: wait for a penguin to waddle into a clean patch of sand, or for a pair to stand together on a rock with the sea behind.

SANParks asks visitors not to push selfie sticks through the fences or near the penguins, and not to touch or feed them: their beaks are as sharp as razors. Keep your arms inside the railing and let the birds come to you.

At Cape Point the views run wide and high. Shoot the lighthouse from the path below it, then turn around for the long line of cliffs falling to the sea. On a clear day the colour of the water near the point looks unreal in photographs, so take more than you think you need.

97%

Why the colony matters

SANCCOB says the African penguin has already lost 97% of its population.

The IUCN moved the species to Critically Endangered in 2024, the first of the 18 penguin species to meet that category. Watching from the boardwalk, quietly, is part of keeping Boulders a safe place for them.

Insert · what to bring

Pack light, but pack for wind

Walking shoes come first: the guided walk to the Cape of Good Hope needs medium fitness and good shoes, as the listing says. A light windproof layer, a hat, sun cream and a bottle of water cover the rest of a long day outdoors.

Bring a bank card, because both gates are cash-free and one payment is made per vehicle at Cape Point. South Africans who want the local rate must ask for it at the gate and show proof of identity, and SADC nationals need their passport for theirs.

A small backpack is enough. Leave drones, dogs and beach umbrellas behind: dogs are kept off the Boulders beaches, and alcohol and smoking are not allowed there either. A snack helps too, because lunch depends on where and when the coach stops.

Insert · the walk

The guided walk between two famous capes

At Cape Point you choose your own pace. You can walk up to the old lighthouse or ride the Flying Dutchman funicular, then join the guided walk across to the Cape of Good Hope, or take the coach round instead. The walk needs medium fitness and proper shoes.

The trail follows the cliffs above the sea, with fynbos on both sides and wide views of the ocean. SANParks notes that the sailor Dias called this the Cape of Storms in 1488, and Sir Francis Drake later called it the fairest Cape in all the world.

The guiding is in English only, so a visitor who prefers another language should plan to read the signs and the boards at the visitor centres. SANParks also runs free guided walks at Cape Point on selected Sunday mornings, if you return on your own another day.

What you want to know, answered briefly.

Where do the penguins live?

At Boulders, in Simon's Town. SANParks runs this penguin colony in Cape Town as part of Table Mountain National Park; the birds are best seen from Foxy Beach.

How long does the day tour last?

8 hours. About an hour at Boulders, about 2 at Cape Point and half an hour at the Cape of Good Hope.

Where does the coach pick me up?

At a City Sightseeing stop. Stops run from Camps Bay at 08:55 to Orange Street at 09:47; the V&A Waterfront stop is at 09:30.

Are the park fees included?

No. Boulders and Cape Point are paid on the day, by card, and the funicular is extra too.

How much is entry to Boulders?

R282 for an international adult. That is the SANParks fee for 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027; a child pays R138. Check SANParks before you go.

Can I touch the penguins?

No. SANParks asks visitors not to touch or feed them; their beaks are razor sharp.

Is there a guided hike?

Yes, an optional one. It runs from Cape Point to the Cape of Good Hope and needs medium fitness and walking shoes.

Can children join?

Yes. Children aged 2 to 11 pay a lower price, infants sit on a lap, and strollers are possible.

Does it leave earlier in the holidays?

Yes, by about 50 minutes. From 14 December to 5 January the coach departs about 50 minutes earlier at every stop.

What if it rains or the wind is strong?

Dress for it. Bring a windproof layer; if your plans change, you can cancel for free up to 24 hours before departure.

Insert · on your own

Seeing the colony without a tour

You do not need a tour to reach Boulders. SANParks says a railway runs from Cape Town along the False Bay coast to Simon's Town, and the colony lies on the edge of that town. Gate times change with the season: from 07:00 to 19:30 in December and January, and from 08:00 to 17:00 from April to September.

Arrive early in summer, since parking near the colony is limited, and come at low tide if you want space on the beach. SANParks says gate times can change without notice, so a quick look at the park's page before you set out is worth it.

For a second colony, CapeNature runs Stony Point in Betty's Bay, 70 to 90 minutes' drive from Cape Town, with a boardwalk through the birds. It opens from 08:00 to 16:30, and the last permits are issued at 15:45. Boulders stays the classic penguin beach in Cape Town; Stony Point is the quieter second choice.

Insert · honest advice

Is this coach day right for you?

This is a big coach day, not a small-group trip: the group can reach 60, and the timings are fixed. It suits first-time visitors who want both the penguins and Cape Point without hiring a car, families with older children, and anyone happy to follow a clear plan with a guide.

It is less suited to photographers who want long hours at the colony, since the tour gives about an hour at Boulders. If the penguins are your main reason to go, a half-day trip with 2 hours at the colony may fit better.

Remember the extras in your budget: park fees at both gates, the funicular if you take it, and lunch. With those in mind, the day is an easy, well-paced way to see the southern peninsula in comfort.
